Wineries Around Greenwich Village
New York City was the first part of New York State to have grape orchards. When the Dutch settlers moved into the state in the 1600’s, they planted grapes, on what is now Manhattan. Initially, the type of grape they brought with them was unable to survive the harsh weather, so the settlers planted different varieties that consisted of hybrid varieties as well as grapes that were native to the area. It was eventually discovered that the plants brought over from Europe could survive, as long as they were grafted into the native plant’s rootstock. This discovery has made New York a strong contender in the wine industry even today. Currently, there are over 300 wineries in the state of New York. Within Greenwich Village, there are many different wineries where people can go to taste the different wines of the region as well as purchase their favorite bottle.
